We have been having so much fun lately! On Friday, we had a blast being a part of the first annual Homecoming Unparade event. It was wonderful connecting with students, hearing their ideas, and learning more about what they would like to see from our program and how we can continue to grow together.
On Saturday, we kicked off our first SNL of the year with a fun-filled day of pumpkin painting 🎃, a Halloween movie 🎬, open gym 🏀, open beading and sewing, and a delicious meal featuring sloppy joes, chips, oranges, cookies, and drinks. We were thrilled to have more than 75 attendees join us for the Day Session. Check out some photos of some of the many and amazing pumpkins that were painted!
During the Evening Session, 59 attendees enjoyed an open gym, a movie, board games, beading, and sewing, along with another tasty meal prepared and served by our Student Youth Event Workers.
A huge shout out to our Student Youth Event Workers 🙌 for helping with registration, surveys, pumpkin distribution, setup, cleanup, cooking, and serving food. The 21CCLC would also like to thank Rance and Melissa Bahr Farm, M&M Pumpkins, and Merlin Feeken for providing such a great variety of pumpkins, and we can't forget to thank Cindy Kingbird! Her famous mac & cheese made a delicious addition to the menu. 🧀
Everyone's hard work made this Saturday such a success, and we are excited to keep working with our community and at future school district events.

Let’s build strong academic skills have a great school year!

The Deer River XC meet was moved from its usual location at the golf course to the White Oak Antique Tractor Club, where spooky trails and haunted houses once stood. Good thing the Panthers aren't scaredy cats.
Markis Washington: A Record-Breaking 5K
During warm-ups, the Panthers reflected on one of cross country’s purest truths: no timeouts, no substitutions, no bad calls. It’s just you vs. your mind out on the course. Markis carried that mindset, grinning as he told me, “Good thing—I’m gonna run a PR (personal record) today, Coach.”
He wasn’t kidding. Going into the race, Markis was ranked 15th. When coach mentioned it, he shook his head, “Nah, Coach—that medal is mine.” Starting in 30th place at the half mile, Markis began hunting down runners one by one. With 600 meters to go—and the Ely Wolves lurking—Markis unleashed a kick that will forever haunt the pack. He ghosted past the Wolves with precision, moving from 12th to 10th as if invisible, leaving them scrambling to keep up. The Ely Wolves are a State-meet powerhouse and finished 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 11th, passing even one was nothing short of KILLER.
He proved that 15th place was merely a suggestion, finishing 10th, earning a medal, and SHATTERING his previous school record by 10 seconds with a time of 19:37—averaging 6:19 per mile. His splits? DEADLY! 6:25 for the first mile, 6:30 for the second, and an absolutely LETHAL last mile of 5:48 (plus the extra 0.1 miles to close out the 5k).
Afterward, when coaches suggested he save his bib and record the achievement, Markis just smiled, “Save the pen —a new record every week.”
Kenny Litzau: A Strategic Surge
Kenny Litzau also had a phenomenal day, showcasing mental and physical strength throughout the race—especially in the final half mile. Responding to a timely shout from the coach to “make your move,” Kenny shifted gears, accelerating past two runners in the last half mile.
Earlier, Kenny had mentioned how in his video game he built a boat called The Destroyer. On the XC course, he lived up to the name—destroying runners left and right, passing them one by one.
Kenny clocked a 25:43 averaging 8:17, a MASSIVE PR from his previous 26:20. His surge nearly caught the competitor ahead, proving how strategy, timing, and mental focus can TRANSFORM a race. Kenny pulled off a perfect move under pressure, showing just how much he’s improving and learning the ins and outs of racing.
The Deer River meet was a reminder that cross country is as much a battle of the mind as it is of the body. From Markis’ record-setting 5K to Kenny’s strategic surges, the Panthers showcased courage, focus, and strategy. They return to action on September 30th at the West Marshall Stephen-Argyle Invite in Marshall, MN, with the first race starting at 4:00 PM.
